POTH – Comfort High held a brief lead over Poth in Friday’s district opener for the Bobcats, but the Pirates righted the ship and sailed away with a 37-14 victory.
The Bobcats were leading 7-3 near the end of the first quarter, but Poth outscored them over the final three stanzas, 34-7, to drop Comfort to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in district.
After a Poth field goal for the 3-0 lead, Comfort answered with Cole Young touchdown reception from Omar Rivera and it was 7-3 after the extra point, but the Pirates took over from there.
A 52-yard touchdown pass made it 10-7 in favor of Poth and then the Pirates caught a break when Comfort fumbled inside its own 5-yard line on a punt return.
Poth took advantage of the short field and scored on a 3-yard run but missed the extra point and took a 16-7 lead into halftime.
Once the third quarter started, the Pirates went deep again for its next touchdown, this time on a 47-yard scoring strike, and it was 24-7 with 9:18 left in the third quarter after they converted a 2-pointed try.
Comfort’s Mason Judkins caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Rivera in the third and the Poth lead was down to 24-14 in the middle of the quarter.
But the Pirates put the game away with a couple of long touchdown runs after they took it to the house from 66 and 38 yards to bump the lead to 38-14 by early in the fourth quarter.
Comfort fought until the end but was turned away on its last two drives. The Bobcats went for it on 4th and 5 from the Poth 15 and didn’t convert the first down, and on their last drive, a Comfort pass was tipped and intercepted to basically end it.
