New women’s shelter director ready to help

Three new hires named

Only a month into her role as the new director of the Kendall County Women’s Shelter, Allison Peterson says she has answered a calling.

Peterson has almost 20 years’ experience with nonprofits, including a position with Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries as a grant writer.

“I just felt a calling,” she said. “I appreciate that we do everything that we can to support the clients at the shelter. The includes food, child care, resources and counseling.”

Peterson, who replaces former Director Brooke House, added she is not the only new hire at the shelter, which offers a refuge and resources for victims of domestic violence and their pets.

Boerne resident Jamie Randolph has joined the administrative staff after crossing over from the Boerne Independent School District.

Christina Williams, also from Boerne, is a new grant manager.

“We are all fairly new and learning, and I’m super excited to have them on board,” Peterson said.

An avid animal lover, Peterson noted the women’s shelter is one of three in the state with a pet facility.

“So many people are in a situation where they don’t want to leave because you can’t take your pet with you,” Peterson said. “And you don’t know what is going to happen to them when you do leave. Now, you don’t have to choose.”

The shelter offers veterinary services, food and supplies for cats, dogs and even livestock.

“So, we are not only taking care of our clients, but their pets, too,” Peterson said.

Peterson, a Boerne inhabitant since 2010, has two children who graduated from Boerne Champion High School and her youngest still attends.

She is looking forward to creating more awareness about the shelter.

“I’m just excited to get into the community and really meet people who support the mission of (the) Kendall County Women’s Shelter,” Peterson said. “We can talk about how we can change lives and make a difference.”

Peterson said her door at the administrative office, 930 N. School St., is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for those who want to learn more about the shelter’s services and goals.
