COMFORT, TX — Mix-Haus Gallery opened the “Songs of the Ocotillo” exhibit, a collaborative exhibition by Comfort, Texas poet Lucy Griffith and Marfa- based mixed media artist Darlene Marwitz, on April 10. This evocative exhibition blends poetry and visual art in a shared homage to the iconic ocotillo plant and the stark, enduring beauty of the southern borderlands.
Marwitz’s layered mixed media works reflect the expansive skies, rugged terrain, and beloved ocotillo of Far West Texas, combining textiles, acrylics, stitching, and collage to create richly textured interpretations of place.
Griffith’s lyrical verse conjures the spirit of the ocotillo and its anthem to resilience — sudden flowering after rain, the quiet strength of solitude, and lessons of toughness.
The exhibition coincides with the release of a collaborative chapbook featuring Griffith’s poems alongside Marwitz’s artwork. A limited number of chapbooks and 24 by 18 archival poster broadsides are available for purchase. As part of the exhibit, visitors can scan a QR code to hear recordings of Lucy Griffith reading a selection of the poems.
“Lucy and Darlene’s collaboration is a beautiful example of how poetry and visual art can deepen one another, offering visitors a multi-sensory encounter with place,” says Cara Hines, owner of MixHaus Gallery.
