Balanced, ethical reporting necessary

Thank you for covering Democratic events in Kendall County. I understand that the Star has received pushback from local Republicans as a result of that coverage.

As someone who earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in the late ‘70s and a master’s degree in journalism in the ‘90s, I know only too well that objective reporting is not just a media outlet’s job, but also its obligation. You cannot ethically ignore the responsibility of providing fair and balanced coverage to your readers. I accept that Republicans get more front-page stories than Democrats in Kendall County because they are a bigger organization and have more events.

But you cannot, in all good conscience, bury stories about Democrat events or activities just because Kendall is supposedly a “conservative” county.

I also appreciate your continuing support and publication of the every-other-week Progressive Views column. More columns from people with diverse viewpoints would be awesome.

In closing, I want to stress to you that Democrats live here, work here, own businesses here and help drive the local economy.

We are also growing in number, not going anywhere and will continue to work hard to raise our voices in spite of the relentless efforts of local Republicans to silence us.
