SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne Champion boys water polo team will play for the 6A state championship on Saturday after the Chargers defeated League City Clear Creek, 17-12, on Friday.
Champion (26-3) plays the winner of the Austin Westlake, a 16-9 winner over Lewisville Hebron, Saturday at noon at Davis Natatorium for the 2026 6A state championship.
The Chargers never trailed in Friday’s match against the two-time defending state champs. Champion was up 4-3 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Wildcats in the second, 8-2, and held a 12-5 win at halftime.
It was pretty much even in the second half as Clear Creek scored 7 goals and the Chargers tallied 5 goals as they focused more on killing clock than on scoring in the fourth quarter.
There was a measure of revenge in Friday’s win for Champion since Clear Creek beat the Chargers at state last year by the same score of 17-12 and also defeated the Chargers earlier in the season in a tournament, 12-11.
