COMFORT – A crushing ground game and a stingy defense helped the Ingram Tom Moore Warriors cruise by Comfort, 34-6, on Friday, the second straight loss for the home team Bobcats.
Senior running back Will Symm scored three touchdowns on the night as Ingram (3-0) put up three first-half touchdowns to take a 20-6 lead into the locker room.
“This was very similar to the Hondo game our first week,” Imgram coach Tate DeMasco said. “They jumped out to a lead and we just don’t panic. Our kids trust in the system.”
Comfort (1-2) got on the scoreboard first with a 12-yard Omar Rivera-to-Gabe Gonzalez touchdown pass on its opening drive for a 6-0 lead at 7:48 left in the opening quarter.
Ingram responded, driving 72 yards for a touchdown, Symm scoring from 5 yards out. The missed extra point left the score knotted at 6-each.
Ingram recovered a Comfort fumble two plays later and Symm scored again, from 2 yards out, giving Ingram a 13-6 lead with 2:11 left in the opening quarter.
That score stood until late in the second quarter. After the Comfort defense stopped Ingram on fourth down from the 2, three straight incomplete passes gave the ball back to Ingram with 1:27 left before half. The Warriors took full advantage, marching 40 yards in three plays before running back Kaleb Ward scored from 11 yards out for the 20-6 lead just 45 seconds left before half.
Ingram added two third-quarter touchdowns within 55 seconds to wrap up the scoring. Symm’s third score of the game, a 1-yarder at 8:43 of the third, preceded a lost fumble by Comfort. Two plays later, quarterback Logan Spalding hit receiver Kendall Boles, who turned a short pass into a 29-yard TD for the 34-6 lead midway through the third.
“Our quarterback (Spalding) is a good player. He scrambled around and made some plays; we knew that was going to happen,” DeMasco said.
“Our offensive line did a good job tonight, and we established the run game tonight,” DeMasco added. “It was kind of a weird night with the rain delay, but overall, we’re pleased.”
Comfort travels Friday when they face the 1-2 Johnson City Eagles in a road contest.
