Texas ask for fed tax relief for Texans impacted by July flood

AUSTIN — The state of Texas has requested federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the severe storm and flooding event that began on July 14.

Gov. Greg Abbott today sent a letter Oct. 15 to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, requesting federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses in 62 counties — including Kendall County — affected by the severe storm and flooding event of July 14-15.

“Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods need this relief,” Abbott said. “I urge Secretary Bessent to suspend the tax deadlines and waive all late fees and penalties so families and businesses can rebuild.”

Abbott issued a state disaster proclamation on July 14 covering the 62 counties. A major disaster declaration was approved on Sept. 1, 2026, for 23 of those counties. The letter requests temporary suspension of applicable federal tax filing and payment deadlines, and a waiver of applicable late fees, for taxpayers in all 62 counties.

In his letter, Abbott wrote, “I respectfully request federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the severe storm event that began on July 14, 2026. That same day, I issued a state disaster proclamation certifying that the event included heavy rainfall and flash flooding and caused widespread and severe property damage, injury, or loss of life in the declared counties.”
